In preparing for this adventure I had to have my brainwaves mapped. This involved having electrodes glued to my head for 65 hours, kept in place with the natty little cap you see in the photo (although I was supposed to fasten the velcro under my chin). The wires ran down the back into a funky bumbag. I hoped they might have given me a leather cap, a la Amelia Earhart, but it was more like a la Frankenstein. Even more so once they pulled the electrodes out and sent me home with a head covered in glue and the worst case of hat hair you’ve ever seen.
People were very good about stopping for me at pedestrian crossings and serving me quickly in shops. I wonder if authors have different brainwave patterns to nurses or gardeners or bankers?
